"At the Charles McDowell Center in Louisville, the Office for the Blind has a library of resources available to staff, consumers, employers, and other interested individuals.  A variety of items include professional journals, some of which are in Braille, audio, and video tape.   The video library contains tapes on various eye diseases and their impact, ADA, accessibility, employment, and other instructional videos. To see what's available, check out the directory below or stop in at the McDowell Center and browse. There are forms available to sign out whatever you might want to borrow. Cataract Surgery: Briefly reviews the indications for cataract removal. Animation demonstrates the techniques of intracapsular and extracapsular lens removal including phacoemulsificaiton. Typical course of recovery is detailed with patient restrictions. Concludes with a discussion of lens substitution options and limitations. Good expectations stressed. (10:00 mins)

Diabetic Retinopathy: Explains in detail, the nature of Diabetic Retinopathy. Visual problems caused by macular edema are discussed. The film also describes the use of the fluorescein angiogram in diagnosis, and the use of the laser in treating proliferative retinopathy, and macular edema. Vitreous surgery is outlined. It provides reassurance about saving sight, and stresses the importance of medical follow-up. (10:00 mins)

Floaters and Flashers: This film portrays the examination and treatment, of a patient with floaters and flashes. Fear of blindness is allayed. Animation demonstrates the collapsing of the vitreous gel as a cause of floaters, and the pulling of the vitreous gel as a cause of flashes. Posterior Vitreous Detachment is also discussed. Tears in the retina are shown in animation, and the potential for retinal detachment is discussed. ( 8:23 mins)

Fluorescein Angiography: This film explains what fluorescein Angiography is, and what is involved in the procedure. It discusses what is to be accomplished through utilization of this technique, as well as its risks and/ or side effects. The patient’s responsibilities before, during, and after the test, are also reviewed. (14:50 mins)

Glaucoma: Illustrates eye anatomy and how improper fluid drainage causes pressure build up. Describes open angle glaucoma. Emphasizes the importance of compliance. Also discusses potential side effects. Angle closure glaucoma is described, with surgery being presented as the preferred treatment. Discusses conventional and laser surgery. (13:00 mins)

Home Care After Surgery: This film provides the post eye surgery patient, with specific self-care instructions. It describes how to use eye drops, and properly place and secure an eye shield. Also discusses the discomforts or sensations, following surgery, as well as the "symptoms" which are cause for calling the doctor. The program reviews the activities which may be performed, and those which should be avoided. ( 9:03 mins)

Introduction To Cataracts: Highlights the typical signs and symptoms of cataract vision, along with possible causes. Details when surgery should be considered, and how surgical removal of the clouded lens, combined with the placement of an "appropriate substitute" can effectively improve vision in over 95% of cases. Laser Capsulotomy: This film describes the use of the neodymium YAG laser in the outpatient treatment of secondary cataracts. A review of the eye’s anatomy and physiology, helps the patient understand why this treatment has been recommended. The program discusses the general procedures used during treatment, and highlights its benefits. Also presents the operative and post- operative complications which could occur, as well as the patient’s responsibilities. ( 8:22 mins)

Laser Surgery for Angle Closure Glaucoma: This film is intended to educate and inform those patients, scheduled to have surgery for angle closure glaucoma. First, the advantages of laser surgery, over conventional surgery are stressed. Explains and demonstrates, both the Argon and YAG lasers, used to treat this form of glaucoma. Risks and side effects of the laser procedure are covered in detail. The possibility of a temporary rise in eye pressure and long term outcome are discussed. ( 6:23 mins)

Laser Surgery for Open Angle Glaucoma: This film is aimed specifically at those glaucoma patients scheduled for laser surgery. A detailed explanation is given of how the Argon laser works, and specifically how the doctor will use it to treat open angle glaucoma. The procedure itself, along with the advantages and risks of laser surgery, are covered in detail. Immediate post-op side effects are mentioned as a possibility of a temporary rise in eye pressure. Macular Degeneration: Animation helps the patient understand how central vision is lost as macular degeneration progresses. Includes a review of the eye’s anatomy, the process of sight, and the areas affected. Diagnostic and treatment procedures with fluorescein Angiography and laser use in photocoagulation, are fully described. Follow-up monitoring using the Amsler Grid is explained. (9:00 mins)

Strabismus: Reviews the nature of both congenital and acquired Strabismus, and the threat of Amblyopia.
